Russian poet, critic, and translator. Born in St. Petersburg, he graduated from St. Petersburg University. While working as an editor for the anti-government satirical magazine Signal, he published such essays as From Chekhov to the Present (1907) and Walt Whitman, the Future Poet of Democracy (1914). He later wrote children's literature, including The Crocodile (1916), Moydduil (1923), The Cockroach General (1924), and Bunko the Fly (1927), which were popular among children. He devoted himself to studying the poet Nekrasov, and published Nekrasov's Method (1952). He also translated works by Shakespeare, Kipling, Whitman, and Mark Twain. Other works include the unique book "From Two to Five Years Old" (1960), which is an observation of infant language, and the literary negotiation history "From Memoirs" (1958) and "People and Books" (1958).
