...This is a debate held in the Imperial Court in 963 (Owa 3) between scholars of the Tendai and Hosso sects on the issue of whether all can attain Buddhahood and whether the two vehicles cannot attain Buddhahood. Emperor Murakami held a Lotus Sutra ceremony at Seiryoden for five days and ten sessions from August 21 to 25, inviting ten high priests from each of the Nanto and Hokurei sects. At the evening session on the second day, the questioner, Kakukei of Tendai, claimed that all things can attain Buddhahood, while the lecturer, Hozo of Todaiji, countered from the Hosso sect's point of view that only bodhisattvas and some of the Fujio can attain Buddhahood, resulting in a debate. The heated debate continued for the evening session on the fifth day, and became the largest sectarian debate in history on the issue of whether all things can attain Buddhahood or not, but no winner was decided. Chuzan of the Hosso sect, who played an active role, was given a reward, and Ryogen of Tendai was listed as one of the Ten Zen Masters of the Imperial Service the following year. *Some of the terminology that refers to "Kakukei" is listed below.
