Japanese: 分級作用 - ぶんきゅうさよう（英語表記）sorting

When solid particles with irregular particle sizes (particle diameters) settle in water or air, their settling speed differs depending on the particle diameter, and they are separated into two or more particle groups. This is also called sorting. In general, the settling speed of solid particles in a fluid is regulated by the viscosity and specific gravity of the fluid as well as the size, shape, and specific gravity of the particles. The degree of classification (sorting degree) is determined by the uniformity of particle diameters in the sample. It is expressed as the deviation from the average particle diameter. The smaller the deviation, the better the classification.

構成粒子の大きさ(粒径)がふぞろいの固体粒子が水または空気中を沈降するとき，その粒径の違いによって沈降速度が異なるため，二つ以上の粒子群に分離されること。淘汰ともいう。一般に流体中の固体粒子の沈降速度は流体の粘性，比重ならびに粒子の大きさ，形状，比重によって規制される。分級の程度(分級度)は試料中の粒径のそろい具合で判断される。それは平均粒径からの偏差で表される。偏差が小さいほど分級がよいことになる。
