1886‐1978 Spanish writer. He qualified as an engineer at university, but began working as a journalist in London in 1916. He served as a professor at Oxford University and was also active as a diplomat, serving as Spain's representative at the League of Nations and as ambassador to the United States. He fled the country when the civil war broke out in 1936, and although he returned to the country several times afterwards, he continued to live in exile until his death.
