Puku (English spelling)

Japanese: プークー（英語表記）puku

A mammal of the bovidae family in the order Artiodactyla. A medium-sized antelope that lives in the savannas of central Africa, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Tanzania. It is a closely related species in the same genus as the waterbuck, and although its body shape is very similar, its body color is completely different, a shiny light yellowish brown. Its underside is white. It is smaller than the waterbuck, standing 80-100cm tall at the shoulder and weighing around 90kg. It has no black spots on its limbs. Its horns are thick and short, usually 45cm long, with a maximum length of around 53cm. Females do not have horns. It lives in grasslands and shrubs near waterside areas such as swamps and riverbanks, and uses the bushes as hiding places.

偶蹄目ウシ科の哺乳類。コンゴ民主共和国，アンゴラ，タンザニアなど，アフリカ中部のサバンナにすむ中型のアンテロープ。ウォーターバックと同属の近縁種で，体型はよく似るが，体色はまったく異なり，輝くような明るい黄褐色。腹面は白色。ウォーターバックより小さく，肩高80～100cm，体重90kg前後。四肢に黒斑がない。角は太く，短く，ふつう長さ45cm，最高でも53cm程度。雌には角はない。沼地や川岸など水辺近くの草原や灌木林にすみ，茂みを隠れ場とする。
