The name of a place in Fuchi District, Totomi Province. It is located on the western shore of Lake Hamana, facing the Enshu Nada Sea. The name has been around since the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period it was the westernmost post station on the Tokaido in Totomi Province. It is now an Oaza district in Kosai City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The "Shoku Kokin Wakashu," compiled in 1265, contains the poem "The pine-shadowed river rises above the whitebait port, and the autumnal whitebait blows," and it is believed that the "whitebait" refers to this place. In 1353, Ashikaga Takauji arrived here on his way to Kyoto. In 1601, a post station was designated below Shiomi Hill, but it was moved up the hill due to damage caused by the tsunami caused by the Great Hoei Earthquake in 1707. According to the Tokaido Post Town Register, the post town stretched over 14 blocks from east to west, with a population of 2,704 people and 613 houses, including the neighboring Kajuku, Sakaijuku, and Shinden (now Kosai City) on the Mikawa border. There was one main inn, one side-inn, and 27 inns. The kashiwamochi (Japanese-style rice cakes) of Sarugabanba, sold at teahouses in the post towns, was known as a specialty of the road. In 1889, the post towns became Shirasuka-cho, in 1955 Kosai-cho, and in 1972 Kosai City, and continue to do so to this day. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
