Lumbini - Lumbini (English spelling) Lumbini

The birthplace of Shakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism, was a garden located between his father King Shuddhodana's Kapila-vastu (Kapira-jo or Kairae-jo) and his mother Maya's hometown Devadaha (Heavenly Arms City). In Chinese translations of Buddhist scriptures, it is transliterated as Lanbini or Ranbini. It is said that Maya gave birth to Shakyamuni from her right side while holding on to the branch of a Muju tree (or Saraju) in this garden on her way home to give birth. In 1897, an inscription by King Ashoka was discovered in Lummindei, a village on the border of Nepal, two miles north of Bhagavanpur, which states that he "visited the birthplace of the Buddha." This confirmed that this was the ancient site of the Buddha's birth. The ruins have been preserved and are open to the public as a park. This site was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1997 (World Cultural Heritage).
