1853‐1937 British actor. He attracted attention from a young age for his romantic roles in Shakespeare's plays and melodramas, and was active in both Britain and America. In 1895, he succeeded H. Irving as manager of the Lyceum Theatre in London, and played Hamlet himself, solidifying his position as a star actor at the end of the 19th century. In 1913, he was given the title of Sir.
