Bomarzo Gardens

Japanese: ボマルツォ庭園 - ボマルツォていえん

Located in the small town of Bomarzo, 60km north of Rome, this garden was established in the mid-16th century by the lord Pierfrancesco Orsini. It had been abandoned for a long time, and its entirety was only revealed after excavations in the 1950s. It is famous for its unusual statues, full of bizarre and fantastical scenes, but this is probably because the main garden has been lost and only the associated bosco remains. However, it is clear from the letters and inscriptions that remain that Orsini placed the greatest importance on this part, which he called the "sacro bosco."

ローマの北60kmの小邑ボマルツォBomarzoに，領主ピエルフランチェスコ･オルシーニによって16世紀半ばに営まれた庭園。廃園となって久しく，1950年代に発掘が行われて初めて全貌が知られた。怪奇な幻想にみちた特異な彫像群によって有名だが，これはおそらく主庭園の部分が失われ，付属する叢林(ボスコ)の部分のみが残ったのであろう。しかしオルシーニが〈聖なる森sacro bosco〉と呼ぶこの部分をなにより重視していたらしいのは，残された書簡や碑銘に明らかである。
