Ishiiji Temple

Japanese: 石位寺 - いしいでら
Ishiiji Temple

[Japan]
The Nihon Shoki, in the 13th year of the Bidatsu era (584), records that Kafukami no Omi brought a stone Maitreya Buddha from Baekje, the first recorded instance of this, but no stone Buddha remains from the Asuka period are known. Relics from the Nara period include the Sanzon statue at Sekii-ji Temple in Nara Prefecture (sandstone?, half-carved), the Kohokke Sanzon statue niche in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture (tuff, half-carved), the Zutou in Takabatake-cho, Nara City (flower-shaped rock, thin-carved. A dozen stone Buddhas are arranged on all four sides of a square-shaped earthen tower), and the cliff-carved Buddhas at Uchigawa in Nara Prefecture (line carvings).
