A new word in the fields of management and IT. A system in which multiple companies form partnerships in product development and business activities, utilizing each other's technology and capital, involving developers, agents, retailers, advertising media, and even consumers and society, and achieving coexistence and prosperity across industry boundaries and national borders. Originally, it was a scientific term meaning "ecosystem," which considers the components of an organism and its environment as a single system. In an ecosystem in the business world, multiple companies from different groups, sometimes even rival companies, can form mutually beneficial relationships, which differs from alliances that cooperate in specific activities such as production, logistics, and sales, or collaborations that jointly develop and manufacture a single product. However, the term is sometimes used in short-term or limited situations, such as the "ecosystem marketing" of the "GEORGIA x AOKI Collaboration Campaign" (Spring 2010) that was launched by soft drink maker Coca-Cola Japan and men's clothing store AOKI for new graduates. In the IT field, the ecosystem revenue model has been proposed for a long time, in which developers, vendors, third parties, and users organically link and grow together around a basic OS such as Microsoft's Windows, and has actually produced results. Furthermore, in recent years, against the backdrop of the expansion of high-speed communication networks and the spread of free OSs such as Linux and various free services from Google, there has been a shift from a vertical relationship with the OS at the top to one that emphasizes horizontal cooperative relationships that include ventures and general users. Just as an "ecosystem" in the natural world maintains a healthy environment through heterogeneous components, mutual cooperation among diverse members and the circulation of equal profits are seen as conditions for a healthy functioning ecosystem.
