Lepidosiren - Lepidosiren

A South American lungfish that belongs to the Lepidosirenidae family of the Osteichthyes order. There is only one species in one genus, and it is the most dependent of all lungfish on breathing air through its lungs, and cannot survive by breathing through its gills alone. In the dry season, it burrows into the mud to dry out. It has a long and slender body, with thin whip-shaped pectoral and pelvic fins, making it the most specialized species of lungfish in terms of morphology.

硬骨魚綱肺魚目レピドシレン科に属する南アメリカ産肺魚。1属1種で、肺による空気呼吸への依存度が肺魚類中もっとも高く、えら呼吸のみでは生存できない。乾期には泥中に潜って越乾する。体は細長く胸びれと腹びれは細い鞭(べん)状で、形態的には肺魚類でもっとも特殊化している種類である。
