It flows from the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, across the eastern end of the Himalayas, through the Indian state of Assam and Bangladesh, and joins the Ganges River before emptying into the Bay of Bengal. It is also called the Brahmaputra River. With a total length of 2,900 km, it is the fourth largest river in Asia after the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Indus River. It originates in a glacier in Mount Kailash in the Himalayas (82°10′ east longitude, 30°30′ north latitude) and flows east for about 1,100 km along the southern edge of the Tibetan Plateau as the Tsangpo River (Tibetan for "pure person").
