It is located in the city of Orléans in the Loiret department in the Centre region in central France. It originated as a medieval university founded by Pope Clement V on January 27, 1306, and is the fifth oldest university in France after the University of Paris, the University of Toulouse, the University of Montpellier, and the University of Avignon. It is also known as the place where the religious reformer Calvin studied law. Since the science-related Collège was established as a branch of the liberal arts course in 1960, the current university has gradually expanded its academic fields to include the Faculty of Science (1961) , the College of Technology (1967) , the Faculty of Law (1968) , the Faculty of Letters (1969), and the Faculty of Sports Science (1992) . In 2002, two technical schools were merged to form the École Polytechnique de Orléans (France). In 2009, the university became a Centre for Research and Higher Education (PRES) together with the University of Tours, and is the central interdisciplinary educational and research institution in central France. It has 14,656 students (2012/13) . Source : Heibonsha "University Encyclopedia" About the University Encyclopedia Information |
