Fort William College

An educational institution established in Calcutta, the center of British colonial rule in India, at the suggestion of Lord Wellesley, the Governor-General of India at the time, to train officials for the East India Company. Founded in 1800, it was dissolved in 1854. It offered a wide range of subjects, including English, Greek, and Latin classics, natural and social sciences, the laws of various countries, Hindu and Islamic legal codes, Indian and European history, Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, and local Indian languages. The college played a major role in the cultural revival of India, particularly in the development of local languages, which had previously been little given attention.

イギリスのインド植民地支配の中心地カルカッタに，東インド会社の官吏養成のため，当時のインド総督ウェルズリー卿の発案で作られた教育機関。1800年創立，54年解消。英語，ギリシア語，ラテン語の古典，自然，社会科学，各国の法律やヒンドゥー教，イスラムの法典，インド，ヨーロッパの歴史，アラビア語，ペルシア語，サンスクリット，インドの地方諸言語など，その教育内容は広範にわたった。このカレッジがインドの文化復興，ことにこれまで顧みられることの少なかった地方語の発展に果たした役割は大きい。
