He was a Shingon Buddhist monk in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods, the head priest of Negoro-ji and Daigo-ji temples, and the head priest and legal affairs officer of To-ji temple. He was the adopted son of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiaki of the Muromachi shogunate, his father was the regent Nijo Haruyoshi, and his mother was the daughter of Prince Fushiminomiya Sadaatsu. In 1569 (Eiroku 12), he entered Daigo-ji temple and studied under Shin'o and Gagen. In 1579 (Tensho 7), he became Daisojo, and in 1578, he became Jun-Sanko. In 1580, he performed the Fudo goma ritual to groundbreaking the Great Buddha Hall of Hoko-ji temple, which was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and in 1592, he performed the Niō-kyo ritual at To-ji temple to pray for the success of the Korean expedition, and in 1598, he served as a jinganshi (curse priest) at the eye-opening ceremony for the Great Buddha of Hoko-ji temple. After Hideyoshi's death, he revived the Go-Nanatsu-Nichi ritual at To-ji temple, and did his best to promote the prosperity of Shingon Buddhism. His works include "Daigoji Shinyoroku" and "Gien Junko Nikki," which are important sources of political and religious history from the period. With the assistance of Hideyoshi, he restored the dilapidated Daigoji Temple, and made a great contribution by organizing and storing the sacred texts and records, and passing them on to future generations. <References> Nakajima Shunji, "Daigoji Brief History"

安土桃山・江戸初期の真言宗の僧,根来寺・醍醐寺座主,東寺長者,法務。室町幕府将軍足利義昭の猶子,父は関白二条晴良,母は伏見宮貞敦親王の娘位子。永禄12(1569)年醍醐寺に入り,深応,雅厳に師事。天正7(1579)年大僧正,同13年准三后となる。同19年豊臣秀吉建立の方広寺大仏殿地鎮のため不動護摩を修し,文禄1(1592)年朝鮮出兵の成功を祈って東寺で仁王経大法を修し,慶長3(1598)年方広寺大仏開眼供養に呪願師を勤めた。秀吉没後は東寺の後七日御修法を再興するなど,真言宗の興隆に力を尽くした。著作に『醍醐寺新要録』『義演准后日記』があり,当該期の政治・宗教史料として重要である。秀吉の援助を受けて荒廃していた醍醐寺を復興させ,聖教・記録を整理,保管し,後世に伝えた功績は大きい。<参考文献>中島俊司『醍醐寺略史』
