This dance spread from the court of Napoleon I in the early 19th century. When the contredanse, in which four pairs of men and women dance in a square, fell out of favor, only a few types of dances were always danced in the same order, and these were collectively called quadrille de contredanses, or quadrille for short. It generally consists of five types: le pantalon, l'été, la poule, la pastourelle, and la finale (le trénis is sometimes inserted as the fourth), and the music used was from popular songs and opera melodies of the time. It is in 2/4 or 6/8 time (the third piece, sometimes the first piece), and has a lively theme repeated in eight-bar units. It was introduced to Japan during the Meiji period and was danced at the Rokumeikan. [Toshiko Sekine] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
