Born: 1848. Görlitz [Died] 1901. German orientalist. Since 1869, he worked as a tax official in China and Korea, and was also the German consul in Tianjin. His books include "Manual of Chinese Bibliography" (1876), among which "A Manchu Grammar with analysed texts" (92) remains the go-to introductory text for the Manchu language to this day.
