A concept proposed by E. Mayr (1942) to explain the relationship between the existence of two (or more) animal populations and geographical speciation, it is the opposite of allopatric. It is defined as "a state in which individuals or populations of different species are distributed in the same area." In general, the evolution of species requires a process of geographical isolation of populations (resulting in immiscibility of genes), and it is often thought that sympatric closely related species, as seen today, are maintained by secondary sympatry of species that have differentiated sufficiently to not interbreed.
