A bird of the ptarmigan family. Wingspan: 18cm. Winter plumage is entirely white. Summer plumage is spotted with yellowish brown, dark brown, and white. Distributed widely in the world's polar and subpolar zones, as well as the European Alps, Japan being the southernmost limit of its breeding grounds. It lives as a resident bird in the alpine zones of the Northern and Southern Alps. During the day, it mainly hides in thickets of pumila and emerges onto grasslands in the morning, evening, or when it is foggy. It feeds on the fruits and leaves of alpine plants, as well as insects. Special natural monument. Endangered species IB (Ministry of the Environment's 4th Red List).
