Hue (English spelling)

Japanese: フエ(英語表記)Hue
Hue (English spelling)
The capital of Thua Thien Hue Province in central Vietnam. It is also called Hue, but this is the French pronunciation. It is located about 550 km south-southeast of the capital Hanoi, on a narrow coastal plain along the South China Sea coast, with the front mountains of the Annamite Mountains looming behind it. It is an old town that appears in records from around 200 BC as a Chinese military base, and from around 200 BC it came under the control of the Cham people, but in the early 14th century it was annexed by Vietnam, which advanced southward. In the 17th century, a castle town was built around the Nguyen (→ Nguyen) family's castle, and after the establishment of the Nguyen dynasty (1802), Emperor Gá Long (→ Nguyen Púc Eòng) moved the capital from Hanoi and began to develop in earnest. It prospered as a royal capital until Emperor Bao Dai abdicated in 1945. It is currently a commercial and industrial center, with industries such as cotton weaving, silk weaving, lumber, cement, and rice milling. It is also the cultural center of central Vietnam, with educational institutions such as Hue University (1957). The Huong River (Perfume River), which originates in the Annamite Mountains, runs through the city, with the old town on the left bank and the European-style urban area and commercial district that developed during the French Protectorate period (1883-1945) on the right bank. During the Vietnam War, the city was a battlefield during the Tet Offensive in 1968, and suffered considerable destruction. In and around the city, the old royal palace, the tombs of past emperors, and Thien Mu Pagoda are preserved, and the city was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1993. National Highway 1, the Thong Nhat Railway, and air routes connect the two major cities of Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in the north and south. Population: 211,085 (1989).
