Aulard - François Victor Alphonse Aulard

French historian. When the course on the history of the French Revolution was established at the Sorbonne (University of Paris) in 1886, he was invited to teach it. Until his retirement in 1922, he devoted himself to research, lectures, and instruction on the history of the French Revolution, and was also responsible for the Society for the History of the French Revolution and its journal, The French Revolution, laying the foundation for empirical research on the revolution. As seen in his representative work, The Political History of the French Revolution (1901), he was a political historian who placed particular emphasis on the criticism of written sources, and published many collections of historical materials related to the revolution. His works include The Society of Jacobins (1889-98), Records of the Committee of Public Safety (1889-1923), and collections of historical materials on the city of Paris from the Thermidorian Reaction to the First Empire. It can be said that he laid the academic foundation for revolutionary research.

フランスの歴史家。1886年ソルボンヌ（パリ大学）にフランス革命史の講座が創設されたとき担当教官に招かれ、1922年退職するまでフランス革命史の研究、講義、指導に専念するとともに、フランス革命史協会およびその機関誌『フランス革命』の責任者として活動し、革命の実証的研究の基礎を置いた。代表作『フランス革命政治史』（1901）にみられるように政治史家で、とくに文献史料の批判を重視し、多くの革命関係史料集を出版した。『ジャコバン協会』（1889～98）、『公安委員会の記録集』（1889～1923）のほか、テルミドール反動期から第一帝政までのパリ市の史料集などがある。彼によって革命研究の学問的基礎が置かれたといえる。
