EDTA - Edta

Japanese: EDTA - イーディーティーエー
EDTA - Edta

Abbreviation for ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. C 10 H 16 N 2 O 8 . It is often abbreviated as H 4 Y.

The four dissociation constants of this acid, H 4 Y, have the following values:

H 4 Y + H 2 OH 3 O + + H 3 Y -

pK a1 1.02 × 10 −2 ( pK a 1.99)

H 3 Y - + H 2 OH 3 O + + H 2 Y 2-

p K a2 2.14 × 10 −3 (p K a 2.67)

H 2 Y 2- + H 2 OH 3 O + + HY 3-

p K a3 6.92 × 10 −7 (p K a 6.16)

HY 3- + H 2 OH 3 O + + Y 4-

p K a4 5.50 × 10 −11 (p K a 10.26)

At pH 2 or less, H 4 Y is the predominant form, at around pH 5 H 2 Y 2- , at around pH 8 HY 3- , and at pH 12 or more Y 4- are predominant. Colorless crystalline powder, melting point 240°C (decomposition). Solubility in 100 mL of water is 0.2 g (22°C). Easily soluble in 5% or less inorganic acids. Forms stable chelate compounds with alkaline earth metal ions, rare earth metal ions, transition metal ions, etc. Taking advantage of this property, it is used for the quantification, separation, and masking of metal ions.
