Also written as Takuma or Takuma. Founded by Takuma Tamenari in the late Heian period, this school of Buddhist painters continued until the early Muromachi period and is known as the Kose school. It was followed by Tameto, Katsuga (→Takuma Katsuga), Tamehisa, Tameyuki, Toshiga, Nagaga, and Eiga. Starting with Tameto's son Katsuga, the Takuma school produced Buddhist paintings in the old style, but also adopted new styles and techniques from the Song Dynasty, ahead of its time, and established a distinctive style of painting. Some of the members became monks, and were active in meeting the demand for Taimitsu esoteric Buddhist rituals at temples such as Jingo-ji, Kozan-ji, and Kyoogokoku-ji. By the time of Takuma Eiga, who painted the inscribed "Portrait of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro" (Tokiwayama Bunko) in 1395, the style had stagnated as it combined Japanese and Chinese. Tamehisa and Tameyuki got close to the emerging samurai government early on, and went to Kamakura to create murals in temples and pagodas, among other things.
