Crown Prince - Rittaishi

Japanese: 立太子 - りったいし

Also called Ryubo or Ritcho. The official appointment of a new crown prince. In modern times, the eldest son of the emperor automatically becomes the crown prince, but originally, this was decided only after a ceremony to establish the position. The ceremony was established in the early Heian period, and took place in the Shishinden Hall. The royal family and the emperor and a certain prince appeared, an envoy issued a decree designating the certain prince as crown prince, and the ceremony concluded with a performance by the crown prince. Later, the emperor passed on the sword Tsubokiri to the crown prince for self-defense. These practices are still in place to this day.

立坊 (りゅうぼう) ，立儲 (りっちょ) ともいう。公式に皇太子を立てること。現代では皇長子はおのずから皇太子となるが，もともとは立太子礼を経て初めて定まった。立太子礼の制度確立は平安時代初期で，立太子礼は紫宸殿で行われ，王卿参列，天皇，某親王出御，宣命使が某親王を皇太子と定める宣命を奏し，皇太子振舞を経て，式を終る。のち護身のため壺切剣が天皇から皇太子に伝えられるようになった。これらの要領は，おおむね現代にも及んでいる。
