Originally, the Tendai sect regarded the Lotus Sutra as its fundamental scripture, so the original name was Tendai. However, later, the Nichiren sect appeared and actively spread the Lotus Sutra, so the Nichiren sect came to be commonly referred to as the Hokke sect. もとは天台宗が『法華経』を根本経典としたので天台宗の本名であった。しかしのちに日蓮宗が現れて盛んに『法華経』を広めたので，俗に日蓮宗を法華宗と称するようになった。
