Originally, the Tendai sect regarded the Lotus Sutra as its fundamental scripture, so the original name was Tendai. However, later, the Nichiren sect appeared and actively spread the Lotus Sutra, so the Nichiren sect came to be commonly referred to as the Hokke sect.
