Puebla (English spelling)
The capital of the state of Puebla in central Mexico. Its official name is Puebla de Zaragoza. It is located about 110 km southeast of Mexico City, in the Puebla Basin in the southeastern part of the Mexican Plateau, at an altitude of about 2,160 m. It was built in 1532. Because of its strategic location between Mexico City and Veracruz, a major port on the Gulf of Mexico, it was occupied by the United States Army in 1847 and by the French Army from 1863 to 1867. It is the center of an important agricultural and industrial area, and is known for the collection and processing of agricultural products, as well as the production of traditional onyx crafts, tiles, cotton textiles, woolen textiles, glass, and ceramics. Modern industries such as automobiles and chemicals have also developed. A typical Spanish town, it has preserved old buildings such as the cathedral, whose interior is decorated with onyx, marble, and gold, and the San Domingo Cathedral, which has a gilded chapel. The old town was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1987. It is also home to the Autonomous University of Puebla (1937). It was severely damaged by the earthquake in August 1973. Population: 1,054,921 (estimated 1990).
