A perennial grass found in sunny grasslands and along railway tracks. It is distributed from eastern North America and California to Mesoamerica, and was introduced into Japan around 1940-41. It grows in clumps and produces small plants. The stem is 50-90 cm tall, branches well in the upper half, and produces inflorescences in the leaf axils. The leaves are arranged in two rows, linear, about 30 cm long, and 2-5 mm wide, with sparse long hairs toward the base of the upper surface of the leaf, and the leaf sheath that surrounds the base of the stem is flattened from both sides.
