1889‐1959 Indonesian nationalist and leader of the national education movement. He changed his name to Ki Hadjar Dewantara on his 40th birthday in 1928 (calendar), and is also known as Dewantoro. Born into the Pak Alam royal family in Yogyakarta, he became a journalist after dropping out of Jakarta Medical School. In 1913, his essay "If I Were a Dutchman" caused a literary scandal, and he was exiled in the Netherlands until 1919. After returning to Java, he became more interested in education and culture, and in 1922 he founded the Taman Siswa School in Yogyakarta.
