1889‐1959
Indonesian nationalist and leader of the national education movement. He changed his name to Ki Hadjar Dewantara on his 40th birthday in 1928 (calendar), and is also known as Dewantoro. Born into the Pak Alam royal family in Yogyakarta, he became a journalist after dropping out of Jakarta Medical School. In 1913, his essay "If I Were a Dutchman" caused a literary scandal, and he was exiled in the Netherlands until 1919. After returning to Java, he became more interested in education and culture, and in 1922 he founded the Taman Siswa School in Yogyakarta.

インドネシアの民族主義者，民族教育運動の指導者。1928年の数えで40歳の誕生日を機にキ･ハジャル･デワントロKi Hadjar Dewantaraと改名したので，デワントロの名前でも知られる。ジョクジャカルタにあるパク･アラム王家に生まれ，ジャカルタ医学校中退後ジャーナリストとなった。1913年〈もし，われオランダ人なりせば〉の論稿が筆禍事件となり，19年までオランダで追放生活を送った。ジャワへ帰還後は教育･文化活動への関心を強め，22年にジョクジャカルタでタマン･シスワ学校を設立した。
