Aurora Borealis
A scientific satellite launched in February 1978 EXOS-A EXOSA Nickname for "Aurora Aurora." Developed by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, University of Tokyo (later the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, now JAXA, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency). The name comes from "Aurora." The purpose was to observe the aurora outside the atmosphere, and they succeeded in capturing images of the aurora in the ultraviolet range. They also discovered plasma disturbances that occur when the aurora appears. Operation ceased in August 1992.

Japanese:
昭和53年(1978)2月に打ち上げられた科学衛星EXOS-Aエクソスエーの愛称。東京大学宇宙航空研究所(後の宇宙科学研究所、現JAXA、宇宙航空研究開発機構)が開発。名称はオーロラを意味する「極光」に由来する。大気圏外におけるオーロラ観測を目的とし、紫外線領域でのオーロラ撮像に成功。またオーロラ出現時のプラズマの乱れなどを発見した。平成4年(1992)8月に運用終了。
