A port city in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Ukraine. It is located in the southeast of the Crimean Peninsula, facing the Black Sea. Population: 85,600 (1991). It is also known as a health resort, with its mud baths and mineral springs. It was founded as a colony by Greeks from Miletus in the 6th century BC and called Theodosia. It was occupied by the Mongol army in the 13th century, and in 1266 the Golden Horde handed over sovereignty of the city to Genoese merchants.
