…They were probably more free than the upper classes and had a more romantic and adventurous spirit. The first yacht club specializing in cruising was established in England in 1880, and Joshua Slocum (c. 1844-1910) of the United States made a solo circumnavigation of the world in 1895-98. Many of the yachts used for such voyages were second-hand sailing fishing boats or pilot cutters, and when they were built new, the structure was imitated from those of these practical ships that had been used for many years. …
