Kaifuku, which has been practiced since the Heian period, was influenced by Tensho Karuta in the early Edo period, and changed from the traditional shell karuta to paper karuta, which is thought to have given birth to "Uta Karuta" and "Eawase Karuta." The former was aimed at teaching waka poetry, and involved matching the first and second verses of poems. It was made from many waka poetry collections, the most representative of which is the "Ogura Hyakunin Isshu."
