709‐788 A monk from the Tang Dynasty in China. His surname was Ma and his given name was Daoyi. His posthumous name was Daijakuzenshi. He was from Sichuan. He was the third generation of Caoxi Huineng, but was fondly called Mazu because he established his training center at Kaiyuan Temple in Hongzhou (Jiangxi Province) and became the founder of the new Southern Zen sect. He was known for his preaching in simple Chinese, such as "a calm mind is the way" and "the mind is the Buddha," and produced many outstanding disciples, including Baizhang Huaihai, Nanquan Puyan, Xitang Zhizang, and Xingshan Weiguan. The layperson Pang Yun was also one of these, and was also the third generation of Caoxi Huineng. Together with Hunan Shitou, this is called the Jiangxi Hunan period, and a collection of sayings was compiled early on, and together with those of his disciple Baizhang, his disciple Huangbo, and his disciple Linji, they are called the "Records of the Four Families of Mazu."
