A general term for the genus Geranium in the family Geraniumaceae, which includes the medicinal herb Gennoshoko and the alpine plant Hakusanfuuro, and although it is unclear which specific species it refers to, it is sometimes used to refer to Gennoshoko (illustration). Twelve species grow wild in Japan, and two or three species have been naturalized. It is a herbaceous plant, with stems and leaves usually covered in hairs. The leaves are palmate, deeply incised into 3 to 7 lobes, and have stipules at the base of the long petioles. The leaf shape and incision are distinctive, which can be used to distinguish species.
