Gunbei Ito
Year of death: Bunkyu 2.6.1 (1862.6.27)
Year of birth: Tenpo 11.11 (1840)
A samurai of Matsumoto Domain in Shinano Province (Nagano Prefecture) during the late Edo period. A sonno joi (revere the expulsion of foreigners) patriot. On May 28, 1861 (Bunkyu 1), Mito ronin attacked Takanawa Tozenji Temple, which was used as the British Embassy. This was the First Tozenji Incident. In August of the following year, by order of the shogunate, Matsumoto Domain was assigned to guard Tozenji Temple together with the Ogaki and Kishiwada Domains, and he was incorporated into the guard force. At the time, there were rumors of another attack by Mito ronin, and with his pro-expulsion sentiments heightened, he decided to carry out the attack. One year after the First Tozenji Incident, as if on the same day, he stormed into Tozenji Temple alone and committed suicide at his domain residence. He was 23 years old. His body was inspected by foreigners and then sent to the execution grounds at Kozukahara.
