Interleukin (IL)

A type of protein secreted by lymphocytes and macrophages. A group of proteins that show a wide variety of activities against white blood cells are collectively called cytokines, and among them, those with a clearly defined substance are called interleukins (IL). Interleukin means "signaling substance between white blood cells." IL1 to IL7 have been reported so far, and these work together to activate and regulate the immune system. Recently, it has been discovered that interleukins are produced in cells other than white blood cells, such as fibroblasts, and stimulate these cells, making it clear that the effects of interleukins extend to a wider range of cell groups. Currently, IL2 is produced industrially, and two drugs, celmoleukin and teceleukin, are commercially available for intravenous injection or local administration.

リンパ球や大食細胞 (マクロファージ) などが分泌する蛋白質の一種。白血球に対して非常に多様な活性を示す蛋白質の一群をサイトカインと総称するが，そのうち物質的に明確になったものをインターロイキン ILと呼ぶ。インターロイキンとは「白血球相互間のシグナル物質」という意味である。いままでに IL1から IL7までが報告されており，これらが協同的に働いて免疫系の活性化や調節が行われている。最近，インターロイキンが白血球以外の細胞，例えば線維芽細胞などで生産され，またこれを刺激していることが発見され，インターロイキンの作用がより広い細胞群に及んでいることが明らかになってきた。現在 IL2については工業的に生産され，セルモロイキン，テセロイキンの2種の薬品が点滴注射もしくは局所投与用として市販されている。
