Maurice Duplessis

1890‐1959
Canadian politician. He left the Conservative Party to form the National Coalition Party in the mid-1930s. He proposed radical economic reforms to eradicate the effects of the Great Depression, and became Premier of Quebec (1936-39, 1944-59). However, he was originally supported by farmers, and was anti-intellectual and authoritarian. He gradually became known as a dictator with personal ties to business, which further exacerbated the province's backwardness. In 1960, democratic forces launched the Quiet Revolution, which was a series of reforms that led to a change in provincial government and the establishment of a new government.

カナダの政治家。保守党から転じて1930年代半ばに国家連合党を結成。大恐慌の影響を払拭すべく急進的な経済改革を提唱して，ケベック州首相(1936‐39,44‐59)に就任した。しかし，元来農民を支持層とし，反インテリで権威主義的な彼は，しだいに企業と個人的に密着した独裁者として知られるようになり，州の後進性をさらに助長した。デュプレッシおよび国家連合党の反動的政策に抗して，60年には民主主義勢力による〈静かな革命〉(州政権の交代と一連の改革)がひき起こされる。
