1890‐1959 Canadian politician. He left the Conservative Party to form the National Coalition Party in the mid-1930s. He proposed radical economic reforms to eradicate the effects of the Great Depression, and became Premier of Quebec (1936-39, 1944-59). However, he was originally supported by farmers, and was anti-intellectual and authoritarian. He gradually became known as a dictator with personal ties to business, which further exacerbated the province's backwardness. In 1960, democratic forces launched the Quiet Revolution, which was a series of reforms that led to a change in provincial government and the establishment of a new government.
