Waves generated directly by wind blowing over the ocean surface. Wind waves propagate outside the area of ​​generation and become swells. The development of wind waves is related to the speed of the wind blowing over the ocean surface, its fetch time, and the fetch distance. The higher the wind speed, the longer the fetch time, and the longer the fetch distance, the higher the wave height and the longer the period of the wind waves. Therefore, the larger the ocean, the larger the waves that can be generated. However, even if the ocean is sufficiently large, waves cannot develop infinitely. As the speed of the wind wave approaches the wind speed, the rate at which it absorbs energy from the wind decreases, and it hardly develops at all, approaching a saturation state. Waves that reach this state are called fully developed waves. In this way, if the wind continues to blow over a sufficiently large area for a sufficiently long time, the size of a fully developed wind wave can be roughly calculated using the empirical formula: wave height ( m ) = 0.03 × [wind speed (m/s)] 2 , period ( s ) = 0.8 × [wind speed (m/s)]. If a storm with a wind speed of 30 m/s were to blow in the North Pacific Ocean, fully developed waves would reach a height of 27 m and a period of 24 seconds, which is thought to be one of the limits of wind waves in the open ocean.
