…(2)Eventually, a certain pattern was established between the characteristics of film scenes (love scenes, sad scenes, chase scenes, etc.) and the music, and a collection of short pieces selected and excerpted for the accompaniment was compiled (first published in 1913, but the most famous is said to be Kinothèque, edited by Giuseppe Becciu, published in Berlin in 1919), and these were the basis for the performances in movie theaters. For example, when there was a chase scene in an action movie, the overture to Offenbach's operetta Orpheus in the Underworld was always used, and this collection of patterns was called a cue sheet. In the 1910s, the screening of feature-length films became common, and movie theaters began to employ their own conductors and small orchestras (the brass bands in Japanese movie theaters were called "zinta"). …
