[1] 〘noun〙① A common or official language in a country. It refers to the language that has been used historically by the ethnic group that constitutes the majority of the population, including dialects. ※Anatomy New Book (1774) 1: “Everything in the world has a common language, and there are many different languages. Nowadays, there are many different translations, and there is one Dutch language in full use.”② Specifically, the language of Japan. Japanese. Mikuni kotoba (language of Japan). Kōgoku (Japanese language). ※Essays, Byōdōtan (1729) 2: “In Japan, sentences always end with ana kashikoto (abbreviation). Ana is the sound of speech in kōgoku, and kashiko is something to be feared.”③ A word that is unique to Japan and not borrowed. It is used in contrast to Chinese words and foreign words. Japanese words. Yamato kotoba (Japanese words). *Yoriaibanashi (1874) by Sakakibara Isuke, first: "Things that would be easy to understand if they were said in Japanese (kokugo) , are said in a more difficult way in Chinese." ④ A school subject. It deals with Japanese language and linguistic culture. It is contrasted with or referred to alongside "classical Chinese," and may also include it in its contents. It is said to have been written by Zuo Qiu Ming, the Grand Historian of Lu, but the details are unknown. It records the history of eight countries during the Spring and Autumn period by country, and consists of three volumes of Zhouyu, two volumes of Luyu, one volume of Qiyu, nine volumes of Jinyu, one volume of Zhengyu, two volumes of Chuyu, one volume of Wuyu, and two volumes of Yueyu. There are notes by Wei Zhao of Wu. A blind history. A side story. A side story to the Spring and Autumn Annals. A side story to the Zuo clan.
