Sealing wax

Japanese: 封蠟 - ふうろう（英語表記）sealing wax

A waxy substance used to seal containers, documents, etc. It has been known since ancient times that wax can be used to keep things airtight, but it is called Spanish wax because colored cane wax was used to seal letters and stamp announcements in ancient times. Since shellac was imported to Venice from the West Indies, it has been mixed in. For this reason, Spanish wax is also used for this purpose. Modern sealing wax is different from the original wax, and is a mixture of various resins, turpentine, fillers, pigments, essential oils, volatile balsams, etc.

容器や文書などを密封するために用いられる蠟状物質。蠟を気密性を保つために利用することは古くから知られているが，古代から着色した密蠟を，書簡の封や告知文の印に用いたためにこう呼ばれる。西インド諸島からシェラックが，ベネチアに輸入されるようになってからは，これを混入することが行われている。そのためスペイン産ラックもスパニッシュワックスと呼ばれて，その目的に供されている。現在の封蠟は蠟の本来のものとは異なり，各種の樹脂，ターペンチン，充てん(塡)剤，顔料，精油，揮発性バルサムなどの混合物である。
