A device that precisely measures the quantity of electricity using Faraday's law of electrolysis. There are silver coulometers and copper coulometers. The former is particularly accurate and was previously used to determine the international unit of electric current. When a current I is passed through an electrolyte for time t , silver (copper) precipitates at the cathode, increasing its mass by M , and the same amount of silver (copper) dissolves at the anode, decreasing its mass by M. The quantity of electricity that passes, Q , is expressed as Q = It = M / Z , where Z is the electrochemical equivalent of this substance.
