A city in the northwest of Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Most of the city area is mountainous, with the Nikko volcano group including Mt. Nantai in the northwest, Mt. Shirane rising on the border with Gunma Prefecture to the west, and the Daiya River flowing east through the center. The city center was opened in 782 after Shodo Shonin opened Mount Futara, and developed as a temple town when Nikko Toshogu Shrine was moved there in 1617. Meanwhile, Imaichi City, where the city hall is located, developed as a post town and market town where various roads converge. Ashio, across the mountains, is a mining town with a history centered on copper mines. There are many tourist attractions such as nature that belongs to Nikko National Park, such as Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, Senjogahara, and Ryuo Gorge, as well as Toshogu Shrine, Futarasan Shrine, and Rinno-ji Temple (these two shrines and one temple were registered as World Heritage Sites in 1999). The northwestern area is dotted with famous hot springs such as Nikko Yumoto Onsen, Kinugawa Onsen, Kawaji Onsen, and Oku-Kinu Onsenkyo, and has abundant hot spring resources. Western-style hotels were built in the early Meiji period, and the opening of the National Railways Nikko Line in 1890 and the Tobu Nikko Line in 1929 led to the city becoming a tourist destination. Nikko is a tourist city with 65% of its population (2005) working in the tertiary industry, but it is also an industrial city with 25% working in the secondary industry. Lumber and woodworking are thriving, and lacquerware Shunkei lacquerware is a specialty. In 2005, the wetlands of Oku-Nikko were registered as a Ramsar site. In March 2006, Imaichi City, Ashio Town in Kamitsuga County, Fujiwara Town in Shioya County, and Kuriyama Village were incorporated, and the city hall was renamed the former Imaichi City Hall. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 1449.83 km 2 . 90,066 people (2010). →Related topics Imaichi [Power Plant] | Shimotsuke Province | Nikko | Nikko Road Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
