Foot soldiers - Zohyo

Japanese: 雑兵 - ぞうひょう
Foot soldiers - Zohyo
A general term for lower-ranking soldiers in the Middle Ages. Also called "zappyo." This term became common during the Muromachi period, referring to infantrymen in contrast to mounted samurai and warriors, but it seems that soldiers of lower rank were broadly referred to as "zohei" in contrast to samurai. In the 17th century "Zappyo Monogatari," samurai vassals and attendants were considered to be "zohei," and included gunners, archers, riflemen, bowmen, spear bearers, flag bearers, horse sign bearers, arrow box bearers, shoe bearers, sandal bearers, rank and file soldiers, and young men.
