Bird of paradise

Japanese: フウチョウ(風鳥) - フウチョウ（英語表記）bird of paradise

A general term for birds of the passerine order, family Paradisaeidae. This family consists of about 20 genera and 40 species. Known by the alternative name of birds of paradise, about half of the species in this family have extremely beautiful and uniquely shaped ornamental feathers. Anatomically, they are close to the family Corvidae. They are classified into three genera and three species in the subfamily Paradisinae, and 17 genera and 37 species in the subfamily Paradisinae. All of them live in New Guinea and its associated islands, except for a few species distributed in the Maluku Islands or Australia.

スズメ目フウチョウ科Paradisaeidaeの鳥の総称。この科は約20属40種からなる。ゴクラクチョウ(極楽鳥)という別名で知られているように，この科の約半数の種の雄はきわめて美しく，しかも特異な形の飾羽をもっている。解剖学的にはカラス科に近い。カンムリフウチョウモドキ亜科の3属3種と，フウチョウ亜科17属37種とに分類され，モルッカ諸島あるいはオーストラリアに分布する数種を除いて，すべてニューギニアとその付属の島々に生息している。
