Sakurajima Kunimune

Japanese: 桜島国宗 - さくらじま・くにむね

Years of birth: Years of birth and death unknown. A master carpenter in the early Kamakura period. Working with Mononobe Tamesato under Todaiji Daikanjin Shunjobo Chogen, he worked hard to rebuild the Todaiji temple complex, and was awarded the ranks of Junior Fifth Rank and Suruga Gonshu. In 1197, he worked with Tamesato on the construction of Kaidan-in, and two years later he worked on the construction of the Hokkedo (Sangatsudo) prayer hall, but his whereabouts after that are unknown. Later, in 1213, carpenter Suruga Gonshu Sakurajima Kunishige, who worked with Eisai on the construction of the nine-story pagoda of Hosshoji Temple in Kyoto, was likely the son of Kunimune. These two are the only master carpenters with the Sakurajima surname according to historical documents.

鎌倉初期の番匠大工。東大寺大勧進俊乗坊重源の下で,物部為里と共に東大寺伽藍再建に活躍し,従五位下・駿河権守の位官を授けられた。建久8(1197)年には為里と共に戒壇院の造営に,その2年後には法華堂(三月堂)礼堂の造営を行っているが,以降の消息は明らかでない。のち建暦3(1213)年,栄西に従って京都の法勝寺九重塔を造営した大工駿河権守桜島国重は,国宗の子であろう。桜島姓の番匠大工は史料上はこの2人だけである。
