A ctenophore (illustration) of the family Polytminae of the class Tentacleata. A type of plankton commonly found in the seas around Japan. Its body is 1.5 to 4.5 cm long and balloon-shaped. There are eight rows of pecten plates along almost the entire length of its body, and it moves by finely moving these comb-like teeth. A pair of long tentacles grows from both sides of its body, with regularly-spaced branches. When the whole body shrinks, it is contained within a deep tentacle sheath that is in close contact with the oral canal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
