In particular, many of the so-called "Gothic Romances," which became very popular in England from the middle of this century, have the characteristics of the historical novel mentioned above, if not completely, then to a large extent. However, in these works, the author's imagination is too free and historical fact is overshadowed, so that it is difficult to call them historical novels, with the exception of Mrs. Ann Radcliffe's "Gaston de Blondeville" (published in 1826 after the author's death, but written around 1802). The Scottish literary master W.
