Detention - Kochi

Detention in a penal institution means detaining a person who has been sentenced to a death penalty. In other words, a person who has been sentenced to death is detained in a penal institution until the execution of the sentence, a person who is sentenced to imprisonment is detained in a penal institution and made to perform specified work, and a person who is sentenced to imprisonment and detention is detained in a penal institution (Articles 11 to 14 and 16 of the Penal Code). The word detention is also sometimes used as a colloquial term for detention, which means the detention of a criminal defendant or suspect. Detention houses, a type of penal institution, are facilities that mainly house detainees and those on death row, and there are eight detention houses in Tokyo, Tachikawa, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Kobe, Hiroshima, and Fukuoka.

刑の言渡しを受けた者を刑事施設に拘禁すること。すなわち、死刑の言渡しを受けた者はその執行に至るまで刑事施設に拘置し、懲役は刑事施設に拘置して所定の作業を行わせ、禁錮および拘留は刑事施設に拘置する（刑法11条～14条、16条）。拘置の語は、また、刑事被告人や被疑者の拘禁を意味する勾留(こうりゅう)の俗称として使われることもある。刑事施設の一種である拘置所は、被勾留者および死刑確定者の収容を主として取り扱う施設であり、東京、立川、大阪、名古屋、京都、神戸、広島、福岡の8拘置所がある。
